Map: Grand Prismatic Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, WY

Yellowstone National Park was America’s first national park – established in 1872. The majority of the Park is located in the caldera of a super volcano. Here, you’ll find one of the largest concentrations of geysers and hot springs in the world. Grand Prismatic (seen in this photo above) is easily accessible, and is one of the most visited hot spring in the Mid Geyser Basin.

This photograph is about managing the light. As you may have guessed, this is a manual blend of 3 separate images created using our iHDR workflow. Notice that the natural light gradient from extreme brights to deep shadow is preserved. I was careful to maintain the subtle details – the reflections, the foreground textures, the blue tint of the steam – yet no part of image is overexposed.
