To a Point – Death Valley

Click to see the details in the foreground

I love photographing Death Valley. I took this shot under a thin layer of high clouds at Badwater. We walked about a mile and half into the salt flats to find a place that hadn’t been trampled by tourists… but the hike was worth it. We found ourselves alone in this desolate and oddly beautiful location.

I used a single exposure and a 2 stop GND filter to get this shot. Even with the help of the filter, parts of the sky on the right side were over-exposed. I used layers and masks in Photohshop to restore the details. I used a wide-angle lens to get in close to the foreground to showcase the tiny textures in the salt.
