Map: Pine Glades Lake – Everglades, Florida
Pine Glades Lake is located in Everglades National Park, off the Long Pine Key Trail. Access is easy, though – there’s no need to hike the trail. You can drive up a short stretch of unpaved road (be careful, it’s not a smooth surface), and park right next to the lake. There’s a narrow trail that takes you all the way around the lake, too – and it’s a really nice walk.
This is a great spot for a sunset shoot. The sun will set behind the lake – if you are looking at it from the parking lot – and you can get some beautiful reflections on its surface. Watch out for alligators, snakes, and mosquitoes. I highly recommend bringing along some bug spray. You’ll be glad you did.
For more information, visit the Everglades National Park website. You can view the park map at the NPS site as well.
I waited until after sunset to take this shot of storm clouds over the lake. I chose a wide-angle lens so that I could show the broad sky and the reflected colors on the smooth surface of the lake. A long shutter speed (13 seconds at f/10) removed any ripples on the surface, and a circular polarizer filter let me cut through the glare on the surface of the water without removing the reflections. I used a tripod to keep my camera steady during the long exposure.
