I love the richly colored slot canyon’s of Utah. I have visited Peek-a-Boo Canyon more than once, but never really got the lighting conditions I wanted – until my last visit. I took this photograph while we were exploring the canyons with my son.
This photograph is about composition and light. I wanted to make the canyon appear 3-dimensional by including various chambers and overhangs. Scattered light makes the canyon glow – and to get that light you need to have sunny skies. The sun strikes the red walls of the canyon (out of the picture) and reflects back – making the opposite walls glow in the photo.
My biggest challenge in processing the photo was to ensure that the red channel was not overexposed.
