Desert Sunrise

Sometime the colors come to you, and other times you have to go find them. Our plan for this trip was to visit Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness in Utah. We flew in to Las Vegas and drove all the way to Kanab… but the weather didn’t follow us. We saw that the storm we had expected had stalled out over California, so we hoped in the car and drove through the night to Death Valley National Park. We caught one sunrise over Death Valley before driving back to Las Vegas and boarding a flight back home.

This photograph is about repeating patterns… both in the sand and in the sky. I used a simple 2-stop, soft GND filter to balance out the light between the sky and the foreground. The complementary color scheme was a bonus that is often present at Mesquites Dunes.
