Columbia River Gorge

Columbia River Gorge

We’re flying out to Portland today. The plan is to spend the weekend scouting the Columbia River Gorge – maybe we’ll teach a workshop out there sometime next year. Anyone interested?

We’ve been out there a couple of times before – but we really want to focus on specific locations for a workshop this time around. Suggestions are welcome! :)

In the gorge there are certainly plenty of waterfalls to hit and those can be spectacular during the spring. I made a visit out there late last month and hit some falls (http://www.flickr.com/photos/steveeshom/5565953108/in/set-72157616542084121). I think any workshop there should spend a day (preferably overcast) on the falls. Sometimes in the gorge you just have to follow the light. In the afternoon as the sun starts to set really cool stuff happens. I was lucky in March and hit a few perfect conditions (http://www.flickr.com/photos/steveeshom/5543731607/in/set-72157617575244732 and http://www.flickr.com/photos/steveeshom/5565948795/in/set-72157624312056372). You might consider having an afternoon where you just chase the light and clouds. I’ve found between Stevenson/Cascade Locks and Bingen/Hood River works the best for that as the trees are more sparse and there are places where you can get to interesting viewpoints.

Beautiful photos, Steve. Thanks for the suggestions. You’re right – it really comes down to following the light. We had some lovely rainy weather – perfect for waterfall photography. We spent the last day exploring the region, since it was dry and sunny. It was a great trip.

    Hello Varina & Jay –

My wife and I are planning a trip to Oregon later this year to see the Columbia River Gorge, the John Day Fossil Beds area and lastly Crater Lake.

Let me know what you decide about a Columbia River Gorge workshop.

    Ciao

Have a great time, Joe! We thoroughly enjoyed our trip – and I think I might have a few nice pictures, too! :) We’ll post information about an upcoming workshop as soon as we know what we’re doing!
